MY BACKSTORY

Nurturing my obsession

The thing about me is I'm chronically bored. All the time. And when I'm bored, my brain finds random things to obsess about for that good dopamine. Last year, it was constructed scripts, Tendrilis and Cardialis. This year, I found wire and stones.

Wire found me at a Ren Faire I attended, where some kind strangers gifted me or trinket-traded with me their wire-wrapped creations, and I was both amazed and inspired. I longed to be as good as them, and with the sheer power of fixation and stubbornness, I soon made dozens of things and it became like second nature to me.

Stone is another story; I've always liked collecting random pretty stones I come across, but when I found out about agates, my whole world lit up. I read and learned so much about the earth's story, how stones are formed, how ancient every single stone is. It amazes me endlessly, and I want to share that amazement with you.

THE STONES' ORIGIN

Straight from the earth's crust

Did you know feldspar and quartz are the most common types of minerals on the earth's crust? Feldspar includes moonstone, labradorite, amazonite; quartz includes agate, chalcedony, amethyst, citrine, jasper, and much more. It's amazing that from the same few basic elements (for quartz: 1 Silicon + 2 Oxygen atoms), so many different beautiful stones are formed over millions of years.

Because of how abundant they are on the earth's surface without needing to dig very deep, they are comparably more ethical to use than other precious stones like diamond or ruby. I know it is almost impossible to make ethical choices all the time, but I try my best to do my part as much as I can.

MORE ABOUT AGATE

A landscape drawn by mother nature

I was instantly drawn to agate the moment I saw it, and I wondered why I never knew such beauty existed before. Agate is a type of chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz. It forms when minerals seep into gas bubbles in volcanoes, layer by layer over millions of years. When other minerals and metals also sneak their way in, they create a beautiful array of colors and unique patterns.

Different types of agate are named after these unique patterns:

  • Sakura agate: pink blossoms (iron oxide) intertwining with icy translucent sky
  • Moss agate: mossy patches (chlorite) on a peaceful lake
  • Dendritic agate: anything you can imagine, from ferns and spruce trees to mountains and clouds. That's why dendritic agate is my absolute favourite stone and is heavily featured in this shop.
